The Perfectly Southern Baby Boy Name
As a South Carolina native, I enjoy the pleasures of meeting many people visiting the low-country. Most are fascinated with the unique naming traditions of the south. You see, in the south I like to say we recycle well. You may get a junior here or there, but we are best known for our double names. The key to a southern baby boy name is to remember one thing: nothing moves too fast in the south, so why should a name?
There is something pretty special about looking in the fresh face of a baby and seeing the resemblance of a past family member. Or maybe it is the sound of a family name that once rang through the streets of town now on the tiny hospital wristband. In the south it is not necessarily about the sound of the name that sticks with parents to-be, but the people who once wore the names they will now honor with the life of their child.
Here is one of my personal favorite names and what makes it the perfectly southern baby boy name!
Meet the Shealys!
When Kaylyn asked me about doing this maternity photoshoot, I was absolutely honored. This session was so much more than the celebration of a new family member. It was also a reminisce of two that left the family months prior to stake out a place in heaven.
Mr. Brant Gregory Shealy has big shoes to fill to say the least. His name comes from his great grandfather on both his father’s side (Brant) and his mother’s side (Gregory). He will be blessed to grow up on the Shealy family farm. Kaylyn and Tad brought the late Brant’s pride Chevrolet pick-up truck so we could catch the beautiful afternoon light in the cow pasture.
This gave his proud big brother some time to run around the pasture and burn off energy while we got incredible shots of Kaylyn in her flaming red maternity gown. As I began photographing, I witnessed this humble loving mother turn into a fiery vintage memory. Then we brought in Tad. This is one of my very favorite parts of this photoshoot. Tad is a quiet guy. Some might call him shy, but he is not bashful about his love for Kaylyn.
In the meantime,
big brother Luke found a cow patty as a souvenir for the day. He traded it with Tad for a ride in Pappy’s old truck and a quick game of peek-a-boo with mom over the steering wheel. Luke was Pappy’s little buddy. Little did he know two days after this fun photoshoot in the cow pasture, he would welcome his own little buddy into the family.
Brant Gregory Shealy completed the Shealy family of four at 6:43 on the morning of March 26th 2019. I have no doubt he had two very proud men looking down from heaven. He will undoubtedly fill their legacy here on earth.
